Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, is accused of irresponsible and unsafe behavior in relation to his state police escort.
The Washington Post reports that Gansler regularly ordered state troopers assigned to drive him to turn on their lights and sirens, speed and run red lights to prevent him from getting stuck in traffic, according to state police accounts obtained by the Post. A trooper wrote that Gansler once ran four red lights with sirens blaring.
Troopers also allege that when they refused to activate the emergency equipment, Gansler flipped the switches himself and insisted on driving.
Another account said Gansler “brags” about driving an unmarked state police cruiser by himself with the sirens on. A spokesman for Gansler tells the Post that the SUV used to transport him is owned by the attorney general’s office and that Gansler is free to drive it whenever he wants.
